Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has accused the Nigerian Army of bias over the training of recruits of the State Neighborhood Watch.
The governor made the allegation on Thursday after troops of 6 Division reportedly chased away new recruits of the security outfit from their camp at Nonwa Gbam in Tai Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
He decried the action of the soldiers when he flagged off the internal roads in Odiokwu in Ahoada West LGA.
Governor Wike also raised an alarm over purported attempts by the Federal Government to use security agencies to disrupt elections in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.
The Army, on its part, said troops discovered an illegal militia training camp while on a routine surveillance at the said community.
In a statement by the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, the recruits were said to be undergoing a military type of training.
The statement read, “Preliminary investigations into the discovery has commenced in conjunction with sister security agencies in the state to fish out the sponsors of the militia and the training camp.
“Recall that similar illegal militia training camps were discovered and disbanded in Benue and Taraba states earlier in the year and measures were promptly taken to forestall breach of security and safety of citizens.”
